Sonia called the hotel this morning (16 August) and gave this brief report: Luckily they were not seriously affected by the hurricane. They told me the storm remained 60 miles off their coast and didn't hit land until further north. They had a few downed trees on the golf course that are being removed today. /Mark

2005 - FYI - Southwest Airlines will begin service to Fort Myers in October 2005. Fares and schedule yet to be announced. http://www.usatoday.com/travel/flights/today/sky.htm I should be able to make if from California to Florida in less that 7 stops, and 3 plane changes on Southwest, no? :-) Now to see if this years hurricane season leaves Naples above water!

You should also check out Independence Air (flyi.com). They also have service to Ft Myers, and will apparently send you via Washington Dulles from SF, LA, or San Diego.

Just checked out the flight schedule on FLYI.COM. The summary is, I can get there, but I can't get back. No return flights +/- 2 days. Can get there on the red-eye OK. How is that for service? <g>

I haven't seen too many landfall reports. Does anyone know how Naples fared this time around?

Winds at the EOC in Naples were measured at 121 MPH, right before the measuring instrument "departed the building". There are videos on the Internet of downtown Naples with water in the streets. The storm center entered Florida about 20 miles South of Naples, but the storm eye was nearly 60 miles across. I'm sure we will be hearing from Sonia soon as the extent of damage (if any) to the Naples Beach Hotel. It is hard to imagine that they escaped unscathed.

We've not yet received a report from the hotel as to whether there was any damage resulting form the hurricane. As soon as we know something, we'll be in touch.
