"Alpha" download in "new to you"
Posted: Thursday, June 24, 2004 11:45 AM (EST)
The topmost entry in my "new to you" section is (rearranged to display reasonably) Section: APL Web Services > Alpha Builds; Subject: APL+WebServicesController - Version 1.1.1634.msi; Date Created: 6/22/2004 -- but there's no "Alpha Builds" section visible in the "APL Web Services" section. I get prompted to log in (over and over) when I click the link that should take me there....

The "new to you" provides a list of everything new on the web site regardless if you have access to the content or not.

When you request content you don't have access to, you are prompted to log in with a username and password with access to that section.

If  you enter the CORRECT username and password you get the log in screen again, this means that you don't have access to that page.

Wouldn't it make more sense to not show things you don't have access to, both in New To You and on the site's front page(s)?

There are two reasons we include all the sections.  One is to let people know what is coming, so they can plan for new products.  Second, in case they  have a significant need to participate in a new development it makes it possible for them to decide to become a part of that program.

Well, it sure seems to confuse people.  Is there any way to somehow mark those as unavailable, like removing the link or changing the color, or writing "(not available to you)" or something?

A message that said "the login you used does not have access" would have been better. I probably logged in 20 times, and had my password sent to me via email. Now that I've tried to see it, but can't, is there any way to get it out of the "new to you" listing?

We have changed the login options to help clear up this situation.

If you are logged in and go to a page which requires a different subscription type, then you will see a message above the login fields which says: "This section is not available to your login type"

Thank you for that. But it will still stay in "new to you" forever, I guess.

Actually, the way to remove items which you do not have access to from the New To You page is by clicking the "Mark All as Read" button.

This will mark all items you have not visited as read, even if you do not have the necessary permissions to access them.
