Problem Resolution

Colossal file?
Posted: Wednesday, June 15, 2005 2:31 AM (EST)

I have just run my first test of the Colossal File system.  To my surprise, it crashed when the file size was just above 4,200,000,000 bytes, with a message "HOST ERROR files 0 0 112 There is not enough space on the disk."

That is surprising, as the disk is about 57 GB, and 38 GB are free.

Do I have to do something to enable colossal files?  I'm using APL+Win  5.2.10.  Any help will be welcome - thank you.

Ken,

We've not heard of this problem before.  Is the problem reproducible?  If so, please mail to support@apl2000.com a copy of your workspace so we can investigate the matter.  It would help if your example had the minimal code necessary to reproduce the problem.

Here are some additional questions:

1.    Is the colossal file on a local or network drive?
2.a. If a local drive, what is your operating system and the type of hard drive (IDE/SATA)?
2.b. If a network drive, what is the operating system of the network server?

It's possible that the issue is in how your drive is formatted.  Note that a drive formatted as FAT32 supports a maximum file size of only 4 GB whereas NTFS supports a maximum file size up to the capacity of the disk.

Many thanks for the quick response, guys.  I'm not accustomed to using such large files, so I overlooked the FAT32 limitation.  I suspected the explanation would be a simple one!
