Has anyone here had a chance to work with dual processors yet? If so, have you noticed any gains in performance?

We've not worked with dual processors.  However, we don't expect there to be any real benefit with this hardware configuration for single-threaded processes like APL+Win.

I have not tried this, but, if one starts an ActiveX copy of APL, and uses the Defer method on the server side to get a process started, so you really do have multiple threads running, will the operating system run the second copy of Interpreter on the second processor? And what about Web Services; same thing, multiple copes of the Interpreter running. Would not a dual processor system help in this situation?

I haven't tried it either but I seem to remember Eric Baelen saying once that a COM session would run as another thread if multi-threading was available.

I thought this was said when Dyalog claimed to have multi threading in their interpreter.

Brent is right about both things. Using APL+Win as an ActiveX server, using the 'Defer' method will take advantage of the dual processor. Also, having multiple copies of a workspace in APL+WebServices  will take advantage of multi-processor machines.

Since the postings in August 2006, has anyone any actual experience to report?. One of our clients is testing a dual core processor for a non-APL app, with performance

limitations. They are planning to go to multicore if

tests successful. I expect questions about APL performance in multicore will arise.

So...

Will APL+WIN be adding support for true controlled threading?

Just a thought....

'Thread1' []THREAD 'Start'  processor1

'Thread1'[]THREAD  'Assign' fn
