Making the APL session visible with APL+Webservices
Posted: Monday, April 03, 2006 7:19 PM (EST)

I am testing APL+Web Services on two different machines.  One installation uses Windows XP professional, the other, Windows Server 2003.  In the WinXP case the session i.e. the workspace is clearly visible, wheras in the second case, it is not.

I have done the usual things - i.e.

I have set the APL Service to interact with the desktop, and I used the APL Web Services configuration application property to make the apl workspace visible.  As I said previosly, I am successful in one environment and not in the other.  Can anyone offer any suggestions for me to try?

By the way, I believe I have installed the latest version of APL+Web Services available.

I don't know if this is your problem or not, but if you're running AWS (or anything) as a system-level service (one that doesn't have a separate login attached to it), then it is impossible for such a service to "interact with desktop" (by Microsoft design).

Another possible answer is that the machine that has it visible has aplw.exe registered as the COM object while the one that doesn't show it has aplwr.exe registered as the COM object.  You can't make aplwr.exe (the runtime) visible.

Brian and Davin:

thank you for your replies.

I access our (windows2003) server via terminal services.  I am not able to have the apl2k workspace interact from the desktop when I use my account with terminal services.  However, today, I tried logging in with my user account via the console.  The apl2k workspaces were clearly visible.  It appears that working from the console is a way to get around this problem.

Working at the console is not very convenient, since, our setup requires anyone working at the console to stand.  So, I think I need to find a way to use terminal services and have the server think I am logging in to the console.  Perhaps a program such as VNC will allow me to do so.  Anyway, I now have something to work with even if it is not ideal.

Regards,

Joe

I have had the exact same problem as you. In the end I worked out that you can log in to the console session via terminal services. From memory the command is something like: mstsc myserver.rdp /console
